Living and sleeping quarters attach on opposite sides of a long, central corridor in our Tolmie House. The entrance to the building bisects the plan along its short axis, which will provide views over the sunken lounge towards Mt Bulla on the horizon. The formal strategy for our Tolmie House emerged as a response to the various demands of the site and client brief.
A long, narrow building running in an east-west did two things – allow for desired views to the south and maximise the northern exposure of the building for optimal passive heat gain.
The building’s rural landscape setting seemed to call for a refined and restrained architectural language. The building is a series of masonry walls, anchored in the paddock ground. Bronze steel columns, steel mesh cladding and glass extend between these masonry bookends.
